"This is one of my rarest D’Angelicos. According to Jimmy D’Aquisto, he was the one who suggested to D'Angelico that he build a 17” guitar - which would normally have been considered an Exel - but with some of the New Yorker appointments, mainly the New Yorker Hotel-inspired headstock inlay. I call it the 'New Yorker Special,' although it has also been listed as an Excel (see the book Acquired by the Angels by Paul Schmidt).
