The Gibson Southern Jumbo, or SJ for short, began its life in 1942 as a "Deluxe" version of the J-45 with the same construction: spruce top, mahogany back and sides, rosewood bridge and fingerboard. This model is rarer than the J-45, with its pearloid-heavy designs made to appease the bling-loving cravings of Country music's singing cowboys of the day.

This particular example shows the clear signs of a guitar whose owner(s) played the heck out of it. As is common with vintage acoustic guitars, this SJ had a neck reset (before we acquired it). The top finish has beautiful wear including some deep pick grooves near the pickguard, as well as checking throughout the body -- elements that only add to the charm of these old workhorse guitars. Thanks to the neck reset, this guitar plays like a dream, with nice low action and a bright and snappy voice.

Our tech fully reviewed this guitar and took care of some customary repairs: some loose braces, three minor back cracks, as well as some fretwork. This Southern Jumbo is one of our favorites in the shop at the moment. Guitars like these are exactly why so many players are seeking out old Gibson slope-shoulder dreadnoughts.

Serial #GF6242-A. Comes with a vintage but non-original hardshell case.
