In 1976, Gibson re-released one of their more iconic designs, the Explorer, in a run of 1800 guitars split into two designations- standard, and limited edition. The limited edition guitars had one big difference: a baseball bat sized, 50's style neck. These limited edition guitars are highly sought after, both for their playability and style, and for their association with a number of guitarists, most notably The Edge, from U2, who used a '76 LTD Explorer for the majority of U2's discography, and toured with it for years, until it was retired and eventually sold at auction for $240,000.
This example is not overtly baseball-ish in feel, but is definitely more comparable to a '57 or '58 Les Paul than anything slimmer. The PAF reissue humbuckers are growly and nasal, just like their original predecessors, and the wiring is all original.
The back of the headstock reads "Limited Edition", cementing this firmly in history as part of one of the more sought after runs of guitars ever made. The guitar plays great, with low, original frets, and the action is set low as well. The body is in good condition, with only a few noticeable spots of wear on the back, along with some finish checking. The original hardware is faded, but is entirely functional.
There is a repair on the headstock, where the joint of the two pieces of wood have separated but it's been repaired. The nut has been replaced, and has a width of 1 11/16.
