THE STUDIO KING
The J-45 has reached a status unmatched by any other guitar in the studio as it is the most recorded acoustic guitar in history. The balanced response and excellent tone that a good J-45 can bring to the table has made them a favorite among players and engineers alike. We are so lucky to have a great selection of J-45s in the shop, and this example from 1963 has it all!
ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT
This J-45 is in excellent vintage shape and plays great. It has all of the standard J-45 specs from this period, aside from one major upgrade.
This guitar has a beautiful Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides. The neck is Mahogany as well, and paired beautifully with a Rosewood fretboard. This guitar looks great and the original Cherry Sunburst finish is in excellent shape, showing only minimal wear and color fading. The frets are original and they are in good shape as well. Overall this guitar is in amazing condition and sounds just as good as it looks.
Although all vintage J-45s are collectible, in 1963, Gibson made a very unpopular design choice. As you may have seen in the provided photos, this guitar left the factory with a (now cracked) plastic bridge! Instead of the more popular Rosewood construction, plastic was used to make acoustic guitar bridges for just one year, in 1963. Many of the plastic adjustable bridges have since failed, and Gibson quickly went back to wood.
As you can see in the provided photos, the plastic adjustable bridge that shipped on this guitar was broken when it arrived in our shop. Seeing this as an opportunity, our brilliant technician in Scarsdale made a brand new Rosewood bridge for this guitar. It was fitted and sized perfectly to the guitar without damaging the finish or leaving signs of repair work.
Now, with a Rosewood bridge, this guitar is playing and sounding better than it ever has. We are blown away by this guitar with the upgraded bridge, come on down and play it today!
